Paulo Sérgio de Souza has been working at the Father Cícero Craft Artists Association for 10 years. At 22 his work is starting to be recognized. “I got started by watching my brother working here. Severino would draw and I would cut. Then I started drawing and making my pregnant women.”
Like many of his colleagues, he holds a piece of imburana wood and looks at it carefully to find out what it should become. “The ideas come quickly. I enjoy making the women, people like them and buy them but I also make other figurines. It’s the same with everyone here.” Paulo Sérgio is aware that one can never know too much, and he knows he has a long path ahead of him. “I’ve found a profession. I work every day and can make a living from it. And that’s what matters. I know that with time the work will get better.” |
