Maria Cândido Monteiro was born in 1961 and since she was a child she has watched her mother, and learned how to work with clay. “I started making toys, like my mother. Then there were the masks, like aunt Ciça. And we stuck to the Themes. I’ve been working with my mother for a long time. I was 8 years old when I started. The first things I made were little pots and a dog to play with. A long time passed and one day a teacher showed me a book by local poet Patativa do Assaré. I made 25 themes based on it. I really enjoyed it, it was inspiring.”
The themes made by Maria Cândida are very complex. Full of detail, they surprise us with their lyricism and edge such as in the work “Tree of Life”.
