One of the good things that happened to Guiomar Freitas Dantas was to live near Nino, one of the most important popular sculptors in Brazil. “He saw my work and really encouraged me to develop. I started making birds, then went on to make monkeys and elephants. Finally I brought everything to the Father Cícero Craft Artists Association where I still work. My family was already involved with art. My father was a carpenter and knew how to make furniture, but it always works better when someone from outside encourages you. After a while I focused on making women. I like the nice things in life, and women are nice. I became known as Guiomar of the Old Ladies, but my ladies are actually young. I make them in different ways. Before, I used to make only one woman. Now I make a group of women, because I noticed women are always gossiping about each other, and they can’t do it if they are all together.” |
