Adalberto Soares da Silva, known as Beto, was born in 1971 in the Cariri countryside. Brother of Cícero Araújo, a talented saint maker who died early in an accident, Beto says he owes everything to his brother. “I used to sell vegetables at the market, I worked very hard, and my brother used to ask me to help him. I used to sand his pieces. Then I started having a go at sculpting but always asked him to make the faces of the images. With time, I got the confidence to make everything myself even though it didn’t look very good at first. Today I think my pieces are beautiful because I learn a little bit every day. My life is a lot better thanks to the art I learned with my brother. He knew a lot.”
Beto has been working at the Father Cícero Craft Artists Association for 15 years. He supports his family with the earnings from his sculptures.
