Valdir Agostinho is very proud of one of his titles – kite maker. Born in the neighborhood Barra da Lagoa, in Florianópolis, in 1956, Valdir says he made his first toy, a kite, when he was 4 years old. “In the old days fishermen used kites for fishing. They would sway when the line was running, letting them know they’d caught a fish.” What started as child’s play developed, and Valdir perfected his art. “One day, on my way to the crab market, I met a lady who used to cut up paper to decorate her walls and shelves. I fell in love with those paper scraps and started cutting up coloured paper as well, using candy wrappers to decorate the kites.” Since then, Valdir’s kites have been relocated to walls, becoming valuable pieces in Brazil and abroad. |
