In Paraiba the natural beauty of the North East shines through. In the countryside area of the Cariri, the talented hands of skilled craft artists weave fibres taken from regional plants. Clay is transformed in sculptures that represent the harsh reality and the deep religious faith of the area. Cotton, fabrics and thread are made into rag dolls known as Witches, and complex stitching can be seen in the lace work.
In the capital, João Pessoa, one of its best sculptors works with wood in a public square every day waiting for help from the government or from passers by. In the countryside, communities have started to come together, searching through craft art for a way of solving social problems and revealing great artists, unique in their expression and sensibilities. The reality of Paraiba is a continuation of what goes on in the neighbouring states, no more, no less. |
