When he was a child, about 10 years old, Joca dos Galos (Joaquim Davi da Silva Neto) used to make cars out of tin cans to play with. That was back in the town of Bayeux (PE), where he was born. Then he started making animals to sell in the local market. He moved to Araçagi and carried on his work, specializing in roosters, peacocks and other birds.
Tin cans remain his main material. For two months worth of work, he needs a thousand tin cans. “Some people give them to me, but most of them I buy from the scrap yard. It can’t be just any can. I use three kinds of large cans. I cut them, weld them together and paint them so they won’t rust. I make up the birds as I go along, and I tried teaching the youngsters around here. Of 10, only 3 enjoyed it and are working with it. But for me, it’s my life and the way I support my family.”
