In the Valley Alto da Ribeira, near the town of Barra do Chapéu, Trindade Teixeira de Oliveira continues a traditional way of working with clay. Born in 1950, she says her mother used to make all sorts of things with clay in order to help at home. “The clay I use comes from Pinheiro Verde. I discovered that I love making animals. I discovered it out of need, because we needed something extra to help with our earnings. The farm wasn’t enough.” Her husband, Kalil de Oliveira, is a great admirer of her work and helps her to prepare the clay. Trindade makes bottles and dolls, chickens, pigs and dogs. “One of the animals I’ve never actually seen. I called it Water Beast, and people liked it.” Trindade’s work, and that of other local artists, can be seen at the Casa do Artesão (Craft Artist House) in Apiaí. |
