Despite being the country’s smallest state, Sergipe boasts plenty of attractions. Following in the tradition of the North East, the countryside becomes colourfully decorated for the festivals in June, and carnival starts two weeks before the official calendar date. It was in this region that the legendary bandits Lampião and Maria Bonita were killed, but they live on in verse, prose, and through the hands of the local craft artists. Father Cícero and all the Catholic saints are recurrent themes, as is the mighty São Francisco River, which acts as a frontier and integrates land and people. Clay, wood and visionary saint makers are one of its greatest riches.
