Known as Brazil’s power engine, the State of São Paulo has always welcomed outsiders. It has been a destination for migrants and immigrants from everywhere, who together have helped build in the capital the most cosmopolitan of all Brazilian cities. Among them there have been many artists and craft artists. Some moved to São Paulo in search of work, some already had a job to come to. Many stayed forever and carried on creating. Most live in the countryside, because in the big urban centres everything is rushed and there’s always pressure from the industries. But São Paulo has given Brazil one of its greatest writers, Monteiro Lobato, who has created the country’s greatest children literature. It was home to the Week of Modern Art, which revolutionized the nation’s culture in the 1920s. It houses the country’s main museums and galleries. And to this day every corner of the State is home to hands that create characters, saints and animals in wood, stone, clay, paper and from the garbage that accumulates everywhere, in pieces that must be observed with attention, revealing the soul of a State that is a reflection of the whole country. |
