Pernambuco is the land of frevo, carnival and Caruaru – the biggest outdoor market in the world and part of the cultural patrimony of Brazil; homeland of Master Vitalino and the capital of forró. It’s the land of cordel (handmade storybooks), puppets and dolls. In the middle of the dry countryside lies the largest collection of popular art in the state (Pernambuco Craft Art Centre) and the most famous woodcut printing workshops including the one where the family of J. Borges works. We show here a synthesis of this state that has lace, weaving, toys, and religious festivals in which the sacred and the profane mix and live side by side in peace. Pernambuco also features Petrolina, Tracunhaém and Ibimirim, towns where most houses are studios for artists who sculpt their angels, saints, figureheads, bandits and countrymen out of clay and wood.
There’s also Francisco Brennand who restored and offered to the people of Pernambuco, Brazil and the world what must be the biggest collection of clay sculptures by a single artist in one place. In a generous gesture he shares his cosmic and visionary world with all of us. |
