It’s not by chance that the capital of Parana state is Curitiba, which in tupi means “plenty of araucaria”, but nowadays there are not many trees of that kind in the area. Still, it’s the symbol of the city, but runs the risk of existing only in bronze, to be placed in public squares. Once around here, people told stories of a blue crow (that spreads around the araucária seeds), and it’s likely that in the past it could actually have been seen flying around the trees.
Progress was quick to enter this land and the urban pressure is strong, so many things mentioned by the elders have almost disappeared. Some places on the coast and in small villages in the North East corner still hold important cultural manifestations. One of them is the local “caiçara” culture, with festivals and rhythms of its own, such as the fandango.
Talented hands carve and incise amazing figurines on clay and wood that tell little known stories. Urban garbage explodes into naive art, pure and provocative at the same time. Like the work by Efigênia.
