Bebeto’s workshop invites visitors on an expedition to explore symbols and icons of the religious and folkloric universe of Minas Gerais. Nilberto Barbosa – that’s his full name – inherited a workshop from his father where he works with tin and gold, toys and odds and ends, as he says. It was in this same house that Bebeto was born, in 1947. “The story began with my grandfather. When I was 7 years old I started working with my father. He used to make a bit of everything, from jewellery to wreaths for funerals and religious events. He also made ornaments for the church’s saints and for the processions.” With patience and an attentive eye, it’s possible to discover amazing details in Bebeto’s world, which began two generations ago. There are flowers and altars, fish, crowns, and religious ornaments that get mixed in a make-believe world. It’s as if time stopped for a bit in there, before carrying on. |
