Maria Abadia Coelho de Moraes was born in Olhos d’Água 40 years ago and since she was 11 she’s been weaving straw and natural fibres. She made her first piece with her mother. “We used to make straw hats for ourselves.” She remembers when someone organized a swap shop in town. “People would bring clothes, shoes, toys and people could swap for things they made. That was a huge boost for craft art around here.” The materials used by Maria Abadia are harvested in the cerrado region. She uses seeds, leaves, dried flowers, fibres from banana trees and rattan. “I enjoy making local things, that’s why I came up with the emu, which I make in different sizes.” |
