Known as Lucas, Luiz Fernando de Souza was born in Águas Belas, Pernambuco, in 1952 and arrived while still a child in Arapiraca. He worked as a fruit salesman, did a little bit of everything and now works in a factory of pre-moulded walls. “I think I have a gift for art. Encouraged by Mr. Zezito, I started making objects out of coconut shells, but soon I started using stone and I’ve been working with sandstone for 20 years.”
His short, thin body is of a man who grew up under the strong sun of the Northeast, and he produces stocky characters of amazing realism, true expressions of his life. The lines are simple, the design is clear, and one has the impression that Lucas will go far. As he says, “I make things like this because that’s how I see them”. A poignant example is his sculpture of Solitude. |
