The three Cunha Lima brothers – Luís Jorge, Jorge Luís and Josué – are very well known in Grota Funda, in the area of Guaratiba neighbourhood, as the makers of figureheads and sculptors who show and sell their wooden pieces by the BR 040 road. “We learned with our father, Norival de Oliveira Lima, who learned with Mr. Zé do Embu, worked as a gardener and then focused on art”, says Luís Jorge. “We started very young. My father used to teach us how to mark the wood. We started making saints and woodcarvings. We also make things straight out of our heads, which is more of a challenge”, says Jorge Luís. “We’ve always worked together and lived together. Whichever saint people order, we can deliver. We also make pestle and mortars and bowls. Figureheads are different; they are marked by the chisel. We say our pieces are baroque. They are not smooth and some even look like they are made of clay”, says Josué. The Cunha Lima family has been living in the same place for 40 years. |
