Known as Guará, Jaime Ferreira P. Sobrinho started learning the work of typograpy at 11 years of age. Since then, typography has been part of his life. Although he was born in Uberlândia, (MG) he considers himself native to Goiás, after all he arrived when he was just 8 months old.
Similar to others of his generation, he wondered around the country during the 1970s and 1980s, went to Argentina and craft art became his way of surviving. “I have very strong views about this. I’m against people who think craft art is not culture. I don’t own a house but I raise my children with my work in woodcut and woodcarving. I exchange my work for other things and I can afford to pay for their University and the dentist.” His carved pencils, with regional themes, are always in demand. Guará complains about the quality of the pencil wood nowadays which makes carving take longer. “Things end up becoming more expensive and people are not always willing to pay.” |
