Jaime Braz Macedo was born in Paraíba, knows what he wants and is proud to have helped build Brasília from scratch. “I arrived in 1958 to do that and stayed. In 1961 I came to Goiás and worked in many places. When I started sculpting I was working as a driver truck. In 1996 there wasn’t much work and I saw a TV documentary about Januária (MG) city and the ‘carranca’ (figure head) sculptures they make there. That inspired me and I started doing my own thing. I think it’s a gift. I had an old aunt who used to make pots.”
Today, at 68, Jaime Braz Macedo runs a grocery shop and beside it there is a garage where he keeps his art and souvenirs. He continues to sculpt in clay which comes from Santa Bárbara (GO) – 60 km away from Goiânia – and is wood fired. He has sculpted in wood and stone. “Clay looks better and my grandchildren like it. Who knows, one of them might take a liking to it.”
