Humberto Araújo was born in Belo Horizonte, in 1964, and from an early age watched his uncle Maurino sculpting. Like a sorcerer’s apprentice he soon got interested in woodcarving. While studying and working, in his spare time he worked with wood. “Within the family, I ended up following a different path. I studied and graduated as an engineer, but I never stopped sculpting. I think it was something inside me. Sometimes I thought I hadn’t genius enough, but I still wanted to create. That’s art to me. In July 1996 I stopped everything else I was doing to concentrate on sculpting. The articulated sculptures came along in 1999, when I was looking for large tree trunks but couldn’t find them. The only way was to put together different pieces of wood, to create volume. I think my pieces are quite lyrical.” Humberto says he’s been happier since he started working solely with art. “Maurino was very important to me. He told me to keep going. I believed him, and every day I enjoy what I do more.” |
