The state of Espírito Santo lies hidden on the coast that links the Southeast to the Northeast. Less famous than the neighbouring Rio de Janeiro, it’s still very charming. The beaches, the mountains, the harbours and the local folkloric festivals are all incredibly beautiful – as is the work of its popular artists. One example is the famous black cooking pots, used to prepare the typical delicacy “moqueca”, a delicious fish stew. In the countryside many ancient traditions survive, including folkloric dances and parties that feature unique musical instruments and decorated banners that bring joy to rural communities and urban areas alike. The North of Espírito Santo is an area of contrasts, where wetlands and desert areas exist side by side. In the middle of it all, the centenarian Mrs. Antônia (see page 296), continues to work with clay, asking God never to let the tradition die.
