Elias Francisco dos Santos’s great-grandparents were farmers who helped found Alto do Moura, and that’s where he grew up. Still a boy, he helped feed the animals. He used to get bits of clay from the banks of the river, and the first thing he ever made was a train. “My grandmother said I shouldn’t take it to bits, because it could be sold. I sold it for 2 coins, which was a lot to me. I carried on making things, because at the time Vitalino was already a master and made a living from art. I started making animals and images like everyone else. I carried on modelling everything I saw around me.”
Elias was born in 1924. |
