The oldest son of Etewaldo Cruz Santiago, Edivaldo Cruz Santiago has always worked with his father, helping him with his clay work. Born in 1968, he says he learned everything he knows with the old man. “My life has been odd. I joined the army, and when they found out that I could sculpt in clay the officers started asking me to make soldiers, sailors, coat of arms and so on. I made them. I also used to make religious figures but the military figurines ended up being my specialty and my bread and butter. I like to make everything full of detail. I believe that with time sculptors discover things and become wiser, with more knowledge.” The life-size pieces by Edivaldo can be seen in the gardens of several army bases. “In the base where I served they even gave me days off so I could go home and make the sculptures they wanted.”
