Baptized Clodoveu Penha de Castro, Veveu was born in Mariana (MG) in 1945. There was no way for him not getting involved with soapstone as he grew up in its midst. “I grew up in the countryside, and had to help support my family, and as a teenager I moved to São Paulo to work as a bricklayer. After a while I went back to Ouro Preto with my mother who wanted me to work at an American steel plant that had opened near there. I spent 10 years working there, but in my spare time I would always play with a piece of stone. Since the day I left the plant I’ve been working only with stone sculptures.” Self taught, Veveu says art moulded him, and teaches him what to do. Each of his sculptures has a history, and he respects each stone as if it were a person. In 2005 he said: “art unblocks our minds and takes us travelling in a world of the imagination, searching for beauty and truth, making our spirit pure, so life becomes clear, objective and full of truth and certainty”. |
