Cícero José dos Santos was born in Coqueiro Seco (AL) in 1957, and when he was one year old his family moved to Marechal Deodoro. “I went to live in the neighbourhood of Praia do Francês. At 12 I used to go to the beach looking for stones and pebbles to sculpt. I used to make animals, but it was very hard to find tools for what I wanted to make. Then I discovered wood. Around here there are many sculptors who work with wood. That is how I started. I never learned with anyone, I was my own teacher. That’s why I think I never learned properly, and will have to do a lot to be better. I have always lived off my wood sculptures but when things get tough I do other things. I can use rope, clay, even plaster.” |
