Cândido Moreira da Silva was born in 1927, in Campo Grande, near São Luís do Paraitinga. “I’ve always lived around here. I worked with reforestation, planting, howing and felling trees and when I retired I didn’t have anything to do. I started making animals and figurines to pass the time. First I made four figurines for the local festival in honour of the Holy Ghost, dolls playing the guitar. I really enjoy making donkeys, cows, sheep, birds and domestic animals. And I like to use Embaúba wood, which isn’t protected by any law and so I can use it freely.” |
