Antônio Santana de Lima – known as Santana – was born in Pedro Velho (CE), in 1964, and while still a baby went to live in Ceará-Mirim. He started whittling wood at 13, to satisfy his curiosity. “I used to go to Natal and look at carving tools, which interested me. I really like tools. One day I got home, found some bits of iron and took them to an grinding tool. I made my first chisels. I still make my own tools. Even when I had another job I used to make things in wood, because the best thing is to do what we enjoy. I make the Last Supper in a North Eastern style, orishas, people of the countryside and even erotic scenes.” He only uses imburana wood from João Câmara (RN). “It’s a great wood to work with. It takes me almost 8 days to make a miniature using the centre of imburana wood. I like small pieces but they are hard work.” |
