Capital of the state of Amazonas, Manaus is located at the junction of many waters. There, the dark waters of the Negro River (Black River) and the muddy waters of the Solimões River meet, merging into the Amazon River. There are many creeks and streams. Everything seems enormous. The exuberance of the forest belongs to all and we hope it will remain that way. The essence of simple men and artistic souls shows naturally, without being affected or pretentious. Throughout history there have been many master sculptors and woodcarvers. The wood comes from the rivers, forest clearings, from roots left about and from local sawmills. There is a great variety of expressions and drawings that mix legends, facts, tales and wishes. From a sculptor who builds his own canoes to a man born in Sao Paulo who arrived in Manaus in 1976 and now sculpts faces of native people that seem to come alive, noble and strong, as they should always be.
