The only way to reach the capital of the state of Amapá, Macapá is by plane or boat from Belém (PA). Situated on the left bank of the Amazon River, and crossed by the Equator, it is common to hear people there say “Brazil only starts after Belém”. Among the hundreds of simple houses on stilts by the river in Macapá there are artists that learned their art naturally, as a way of expressing “something felt deep inside.” It is impossible not to mention the extraordinary women known as the potters of Maruanum. They are born within a tradition of many centuries, that started out of necessity, and their story is too strong not to be told. Perhaps one day it will feature in schoolbooks with other tales that make up our historical and cultural memory. |
