Like all the states in the Northeast region, Alagoas charms its visitors with its blue skies and oceans, white sand and lace, and vast coconut tree plantations. But the landscape changes quickly in the countryside. Life is hard, but full of grace, and people never seem too worried. Progress brought electricity, the television and the telephone, but didn’t erase the memory of folkloric stories, and the legends of the bandit Lampião and Father Cícero who gave him the officer’s rank of Captain.
The countryfolk of Alagoas are proud of their roots and of the knowledge they’ve gathered in their fight to survive inhospitable places and inhospitable people. Along the coast traditions are not as strong due to the intense interaction with tourists, but the same themes still insist on shining through. The lives, feelings and agile hands of the local artists are the guardians of this identity, preserving amazing stories and examples of life. |
